A/c Compressor

The air conditioning compressor, or a/c compressor for short, is often referred to as the heart of your a/c system—and for good reason! You see your vehicle’s compressor is what takes refrigerant gas and “compresses” it or “pressurizes” it to make the gaseous substance a bit cooler. From the compressor, refrigerant is sent to your condenser. The cooler refrigerant is then used to help lower your cabin temperature for a more comfortable drive. Based on its job description, you can see why the compressor is an indispensible part of your a/c assembly. So how exactly does your a/c compressor work? Well, this component is activated and deactivated by means of an electrically-operated clutch. This clutch turns your compressor on and off based on your demands. So if your cabin is in need of added cooling, this clutch activates the compressor to continue cooling down refrigerant gases. Another component that’s vital in compressor operation is your a/c drive belt. Like all the other drive belts in your car, this belt is designed to operate your compressor. This is why, when a/c compressors start to malfunction, vehicle owners are advised to check this fan belt for damage. So how would you know if it’s your a/c compressor that’s damaged and not its drive belt? Well, telltale signs of a bad compressor include unexplainable noise from the compressor and coolant/oil leaks from this component. When this happens, your best recourse is to replace the compressor immediately.
