Most OEM exhaust manifolds are designed using the least amount of metal possible to maintain cost. The end result is that while exhaust gases are not nearly as efficiently drawn out as one would like. As the engine works away during the exhaust stroke, its cylinders are firing at different intervals. The pistons push the spent gases out of the pistons and into the exhaust manifold when the exhaust valves open. The constant opening and pushing of gases triggers a resistance and pressure wave differential known as back pressure, which limits performance by wasting the power.
